Speaking of AI…

Yesterday I came across a post from @StockMKTNewz on Twitter:

Here's how many times these companies mentioned "AI" on their latest earnings calls Nvidia $NVDA: 75 times Google $GOOG: 62 times Facebook $META: 33 times Microsoft $MSFT: 31 times Apple $AAPL: 2 times Amazon $AMZN: 0 times

And then it occurred to me — it feels like everywhere I go, the *constant* buzz on the street these days is artificial intelligence. Everyone is talking about it… all the time.

It started coming up in casual conversation about Chat-GPT with my techie friends in December, then I started overhearing it from random people at coffee shops in January. Now, even my grandma is calling me worried about ‘AI taking over the world’ because of what she’s hearing on the news. 😅

It’s crazy. In my quarter-century of existence, I’ve never seen a technology pop-up & absolutely dominate the zeitgeist as quickly & powerfully as AI has. And the numbers back it up — ever since the release of Chat-GPT on November 30th, the volume of ‘AI’ mentions in online chatter has skyrocketed:

And like any new technology before it (the internet boom, mobile apps, social media, crypto, web3, etc.), as soon as a topic like ‘AI’ captures the online conversation landscape, investors begin looking for companies they can buy to ride the trend.

Of course, the companies themselves know this, which is why the @StockMKTNewz’s tweet stuck out to me — well-positioned companies like Nvidia understand that throwing out the word ‘AI’ as often as possible in their earnings call is a bullish signal for trendy investors (just as a lack of ‘AI’ mentions from a company like Amazon could be seen as a red flag… get with the times old man!)

But is a companies own internal association with ‘AI’ the best text-based yardstick to forecast future AI success by?

Out of curiosity, I decided to try & find a less biased lens into which companies are actually riding the AI trend the most, *outside* of their own mentions of the subject. Like sure, a company like Nvidia can say ‘AI’ all they want, but what probably matters more is how much *other* people are talking about Nvidia + AI. What do the masses think?

Stocks with Most ‘AI’ Chatter

So I went back over the past 3-months and measured which public copmanies were mentioned most-often alongside the term ‘AI’ or ‘artificial intelligence’. The results:

Instead of Nvidia, the top ‘AI’-mentioned stock in news, tweets, and blog posts over the past 3 months has been (you guessed it): Microsoft.

It makes sense — Microsoft recently announced a $10B investment/partnership with ChatGPT-maker OpenAI, and has already worked the partnership into an AI-supported version of its Bing web browser.

The full top 10 list:

1. Microsoft MSFT 0.00

2. Alphabet GOOG 0.00

3. AMD AMD 0.00

4. IBM IBM 0.00

5. Upstart UPST 0.00

6. Nvidia NVDA 0.00

7. Tesla TSLA 0.00

8. Intel INTC 0.00

9. Bidu BIDU 0.00

10. Amazon AMZN 0.00

11. Palantir PLTR 0.00

Of course, Nvidia still made the list at #6, but not quite as much hype as their earnings transcript would lead you to believe. That said, if you’re looking for places to start thinking about investing in the AI trend, these stocks are all front-runners worthy of attention (at least as far as news outlets are concerned).
